Yes - but you have to get the polyurathane off before you paint or stain it, otherwise the paint / stain wo not adhere. This is doable, but you will need to ''strip'' the piece first to get it down to the bare wood.
yes you can paint over it but you might get better looking results if you use a darker ''varnish stain'' this will make it as dark as you want but will still show some of the wood grain for a more attractive appearance. all paint stores stock various colors of varnish stain(min wax is a good brand) be sure to clean the furniture with mineral spirits or ''paso'' surface prep & lightly scuff the surface with a fine sanding sponge or scotchbrite pad before refinishing.
